Is it necessary to write a thank-you note after an interview? Absolutely yes!
Why should you send a thank you note after an interview? Because there is no good reason why you should not.
As soon as possible after an interview, good business etiquette demands that you follow up with a well-crafted and attention-grabbing thank you note. It makes you stand out from the other candidates who did not while making your excitement and appreciation clear to the interviewers. A thank you note is also a great opportunity to provide more clarity on any question you thought was not answered very well. It speaks of your interest in the role that you went home and conducted some research to get the answers. You could also seek answers to concepts that were not clear to you during the interview. That would be a testament to your work ethic.
In writing this thank-you note, express gratitude for the opportunity to meet with the interviewer and for the time spent discussing the open position. It is advisable to send this note within the first twenty-four hours after the interview when your conversation is still fresh in their memory.
In no more than two simple sentences, discuss something specific from the interview that reinforced your interest in the position, mention any key points discussed that made you excited about the role or the company.
Reiterate your enthusiasm for the position and the company, offer any additional information or clarify any points from the interview if necessary, and express your eagerness to hear about the next steps in the process.
Regardless of your opinion about how well the interview was, send that thank you note, and make sure to tailor it to your recipient and the high points of the interview discussions. Be authentic and do not copy and paste or AI generate a thank you note.
